Abstract
The extensive scope of biodiversity often results in data being dispersed across various entities. Many government agencies, academic institutions, museums, herbaria, and even private organizations have established their own biodiversity database systems in Taiwan. However, decision-makers often spend days integrating information from different sources when they need relevant data to address specific issues. Additionally, it's difficult for the general public to immediately locate databases that meet their needs. To address this issue, several organizations maintaining biodiversity databases or datasets in Taiwan established the Taiwan Biodiversity Information Alliance (TBIA) in 2021 to collaboratively promote data integration. After multiple rounds of discussions on data standard design, interviews with potential users, and planning for Application Programming Interface (API) specifications for data exchange and website presentation, the "Biodiversity Database Portal System" (https://tbiadata.tw/en-us/) was developed and officially launched to the public at the end of 2023. This data portal allows users to search comprehensive biodiversity occurrence and specimen data from multiple organizations in one place. Users can also download data or access it through API services. With this data portal, our aim is to encourage various applications of biodiversity data and attract more organizations with biodiversity databases in Taiwan to join TBIA and open their data, collectively creating a robust network for enhancing the availability and utilization of Taiwan's biodiversity data. The establishment of this network will serve as a reference for organizations with similar needs.
